Placement Support Worker Alison, from our Swiis office based in Leeds, Yorkshire, tells us all about the fantastic party their office held to celebrate Swiis turning 30.
“Earlier on in the year, a member of Vasstel, our young people’s group came up with the idea of holding an 80’s party to celebrate Swiis being 30 years old. We all thought it was a fabulous idea, so we began to make plans for an 80’s themed party on the 30th May 2018.
The Leeds Yorkshire Swiis team worked hard on setting up the party room to a room full of colour, before transforming themselves back to the 80’s with their fabulous outfits. Foster carers, children and young people also joined in the fun dressing in 80’s outfits.
Claire Hobson, the Leeds Yorkshire Registered Manager looked amazing as Madonna. We had Cher at the party, George Michael and one of our foster carers looked spectacular in her 80’s shell suit. A young person came as Luigi and we also had Spiderman. Everyone looked so colourful!
As part of the celebrations, on arrival everyone received raffle tickets, which foster carers had donated prizes for. We had thirty prizes to give away to match the 30 years Swiis has been in service.
We have some special people to thank. The British Gas SMART metering team in Leeds donated ‘Wilbur the Penguin’. Vasstel visited the British Gas team a couple of years ago and completed the energy game show, learning all about saving energy and energy efficiency. Plus, they learned all about building good CV’s, interviews and preparing for work. Doncaster Dome also donated a family pass for skate and swim.
The party got going with 80’s dancing and there were games of Limbo, hula hooping, pass the parcel, and 80’s true or false game. Some young people got up on stage to dance to some classic party tunes and all of us followed their routines.
Two young people wrote a Swiis birthday poem, which they confidently shared with everyone using the microphone. The poem was then followed with a speech from Claire thanking everyone.
Later, we had a special performance from two of our Vasstel members. One of them sang the song ‘This Is Me’ from ‘The Greatest Showman’. The young person stood on stage and sang like a professional, having been practicing the last few weeks. The other young person danced along to the lyrics with some amazing dance moves. They should both feel very proud of their performances.
All in all, we celebrated Swiis 30th Anniversary in style. Thank you to all the foster carers, children and young people who attended this wonderful event. A big thank you to Anita, Leeds Yorkshire Principle Social Worker, who baked the Swiis celebration cake, which was cut by Jenny, one of our brilliant foster carers.”
