Foster Care Training

what is fostering

At Swiis we believe the high quality training and support we provide plays a key role in enabling our carers to do an exceptional job and helps to create the best opportunities for children and young people.

Caring with confidence

We are committed to providing carers with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills through a comprehensive, free programme of training as well as via access to regular support groups.

Our training programme is completely free to access. Many of our carers have successfully achieved National Vocational Qualifications at level three or four.

Our training programme includes:

Pre-Approval Training:

All prospective Foster Carers are provided with three days of preparation training, prior and during assessment. This program covers every aspect of the role of a Foster Carer, and is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to assist them in their role as a Foster Carers.

Comprehensive Pre-Placement Training:

A number of either pre or post approval workshops covering a range of topics are provided to our carers. These will vary depending on the type of referrals received for your local office. Further 3 day preparation training is provided immediately prior and during your assessment will be provided which covers every aspect of the role of a carer.

Core training following approval includes as a minimum 7 core elements comprising of:

  • Safeguarding and Child Protection (TSD Link 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)- refreshed yearly
  • Culture, Diversity and Equality Awareness  (TSD Link 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7)- refreshed 3 yearly
  • Understanding Attachment (TSD Link 1, 2, 3 and 5)- refreshed 3 yearly
  • Understanding Challenging Behaviour (TSD Link 3, 4, 6 and 7)- refreshed 3 yearly
  • Safer Care and Managing Allegations (TSD Link 2 and 6)- refreshed 3 yearly
  • First Aid (TSD Link 3)- refreshed yearly
  • Child Development (TSD Link 1 and 5)- refreshed 3 yearly

Additional specialist training is provided for support foster carers who work with or have a desire to support challenging placements or children or young people with complex health needs.

Nationally recognised child care qualifications including:

  • NVQ (SVQ in Scotland) Diploma Level 3.
  • Children’s workforce development accreditation.
