Project Description

Nina’s story, Bristol

I was approved as a Foster Carer in February 2014 after gaining recommendation to be approved by panel. It was a moment I found much more emotional than I thought I would.
It took time to learn about the referral process and the complexity for agencies to make the right matches between children and foster carers. It can feel like a dating game but being a single carer I have to make sure I get it right not only for myself but for the young people I will have in my care.
I currently have a young person in my care aged 15 from out of area. For the first five weeks there was no education provision for this young person which I must admit I found very hard as we were living in each other’s pockets. However, the young person is now volunteering at two different places for four days a week and we have a college interview next week. We have great moments; celebrating her 16th birthday, camping, horse riding and attending Ascot Ladies day together. Realistically, we have had bad days as well but I’m very lucky there hasn’t been that many and I am learning all the time how to deal with things.
On the good days and bad I have always felt supported by Swiis. When you have questions that feel a bit stupid or just need to talk I know they are always at the end of the phone to provide support and guidance.

Please noteall names have been changed and photos are not real people, but staged scenarios for publicity / advertising purposes.
